The rising star in the project management software space has been appearing everywhere. From YouTube ads to in top recommendations with a unique way of creating projects into boards and organising the pulses within them. monday.com is a company based in sunny Tel Aviv in Israel, as a bustling start-up city, the team thrives as one of the most popular project managements on the market. They revealed their new name, “monday.com” in introduced in 2017.

The company itself has been around since 2012 and now has a team of 180 employees according to Crunchbase. The company has over $80M+ in funding. Learning about the company is important when searching for new project management software, it helps to gather intel about the longevity and investment into the tool.

Basic Set-up

Let’s explore some of the features

  • Create Templates

Creating your first-ever “board” in monday.com is your starting point when creating an account. This is to help build out your account. You have a host of options, with a choice of over 70+ templates to choose from, ranging from marketing to sales pipelines.

Teams don’t have to start from scratch if they don’t want to. You can preview all of the templates before you commence. These are pre-created layouts that you can mould to your own tasks and projects, creating a new board per project or department.

If you are curious about all of the templates available, before you choose monday.com, you can view them all and make sure they are suitable for your teams. All templates use a similar format, which is this board style layout with customised elements.

And do remember you can start from scratch too, allowing you to craft your own layout. For all templates, they are available here and can be browsed to find out which ones are suitable for you.

  • Design Boards from Templates

Once you’ve chosen a template, you can begin to create your own board. This is the freelancer template for planning your week. You can choose this week view in many categories and it’s goal is to help you to visualise what’s happening in the week.

From this board, you have some pre-defined features ready to use.

  • Project Title

  • Comments area

  • Ownership assigning

  • Status area

  • Due dates

  • Timeline (due dates)

  • Fields for text entry

Creating new columns

The real magic begins once you begin to craft your own columns. Inside of monday.com, they’ve created their own vocabulary around this. Like a spreadsheet, you have rows and columns.

Inside of monday.com, you can add the follow to your board:

  • Pulse (a new row)

  • Group (an new area)

  • Column (a new column)

This can be done by hitting the “NEW” button on the top of the page. You can add as many rows and groups as you like to each new board.

You can create new columns from any property type. This allows you full customisation of your areas. Let’s take an Editorial Calendar for example. Let’s say I wanted two columns with dates. One for due date and one for a post date to indicate what’s coming up next in the schedule.

Here’s some basic column property types:

  • Status (colored areas)

  • Text (simple text areas)

  • Person (assignable areas)

  • Timeline (between dates)

  • Date (for simple dates)

  • Tags (multi-select options)

  • Numbers (allow you to add any number format)

These are good for getting started, but they do have a column store for more. This is very similar to the likes of Airtable which have a similar area to add custom columns.

These columns do make each more board even more interactive. You can add anything from time-tracking to email addresses, to something more database orientated like “last updated” or even a progress bar and creation log.

Many people like the abilities to add any field you like within database.

YOUR BOARDS

Before we dive into views. Let’s take a few examples of layouts that include all of these advanced columns. They come from the templates area, if you wanted to copy them.

Sales Process

This is an example for team sales pipeline.

You can see the title of the sale, the rep, the stage of the sale, a world clock (to see their time zone), last contacted column and even data on how much each of the contracts are worth, you can then see the lead quality and more information.

Perfect for: Sales professionals to capture and navigate information.

HR: Hiring New Members

You can track each of the stages and where they are plotted out (using location), you can also add phone number and what group each candidate belongs to.

You can add any view you like to each of the top segment of monday.com boards.

Here are the available views you can choose from:

  • Files (serves as a gallery for all board files)

  • Map (view locations associated to pulses (rows))

  • Timeline (see a view between two dates and plot dates visually)

  • Charts (data projection from the board)

  • Calendar (see key dates from the board)

  • Form (new answers will create pulses, questionnaire style)

  • Broadcast (Admin-only) (allows you to embed boards)

  • Kanban (allow you to plot cards and progress)

Adding More VIEWS

Creating more views allows you and your team more ways to interact with the data or rows in front of you.

You can add any of the following views (above) as additional viewing angles. You can also have multiple views of the same type.

For example, some people have two kanban views of different areas for the board. Each view doesn’t take too much to set-up but allows you to see the plan or board in a whole new way that can help your team plan visually and organize ahead of time.

Filtering Boards

Sorting information inside of boards is surprisingly accessible. You have a filter button next to an assign button at the top of every board. The filter button allows you to filter between all the columns and per column.

Let’s say you wanted to see all the £10,000 deals in your sales pipeline. You’d click into the Deal Size column and select 10,000. Sadly, there’s no way to sort/filter the information based on data specific.

For example, I couldn’t seem to filter down any deals above or below £10,000. This is normal in apps like Airtable, Notion and Coda. But there doesn’t seem to be this ability.

For many people and teams, board settings is a must.

Inside of monday.com, you can access all the board permissions, members and subscribers, even email permissions too. You can change board types and even use templates to craft your own boards for later.

  • Completed (Ones completed/done)
