Let’s explore some of the features
Creating your first-ever “board” in monday.com is your starting point when creating an account. This is to help build out your account. You have a host of options, with a choice of over 70+ templates to choose from, ranging from marketing to sales pipelines.
Teams don’t have to start from scratch if they don’t want to. You can preview all of the templates before you commence. These are pre-created layouts that you can mould to your own tasks and projects, creating a new board per project or department.
If you are curious about all of the templates available, before you choose monday.com, you can view them all and make sure they are suitable for your teams. All templates use a similar format, which is this board style layout with customised elements.

Design Boards from Templates
Once you’ve chosen a template, you can begin to create your own board. This is the freelancer template for planning your week. You can choose this week view in many categories and it’s goal is to help you to visualise what’s happening in the week.

Here’s what starting from scratch will look like:
Creating new columns
The real magic begins once you begin to craft your own columns. Inside of monday.com, they’ve created their own vocabulary around this. Like a spreadsheet, you have rows and columns.
Inside of monday.com, you can add the follow to your board:
Pulse (a new row)
Group (an new area)
Column (a new column)
This can be done by hitting the “NEW” button on the top of the page. You can add as many rows and groups as you like to each new board.
You can create new columns from any property type. This allows you full customisation of your areas. Let’s take an Editorial Calendar for example. Let’s say I wanted two columns with dates. One for due date and one for a post date to indicate what’s coming up next in the schedule.
Here’s some basic column property types:
Status (colored areas)
Text (simple text areas)
Person (assignable areas)
Timeline (between dates)
Date (for simple dates)
Tags (multi-select options)
Numbers (allow you to add any number format)
These are good for getting started, but they do have a column store for more. This is very similar to the likes of Airtable which have a similar area to add custom columns.
These columns do make each more board even more interactive. You can add anything from time-tracking to email addresses, to something more database orientated like “last updated” or even a progress bar and creation log.

Before we dive into views. Let’s take a few examples of layouts that include all of these advanced columns. They come from the templates area, if you wanted to copy them.

You can see the title of the sale, the rep, the stage of the sale, a world clock (to see their time zone), last contacted column and even data on how much each of the contracts are worth, you can then see the lead quality and more information.

You can track each of the stages and where they are plotted out (using location), you can also add phone number and what group each candidate belongs to.

Adding More VIEWS
Creating more views allows you and your team more ways to interact with the data or rows in front of you.
You can add any of the following views (above) as additional viewing angles. You can also have multiple views of the same type.
For example, some people have two kanban views of different areas for the board. Each view doesn’t take too much to set-up but allows you to see the plan or board in a whole new way that can help your team plan visually and organize ahead of time.
Sorting information inside of boards is surprisingly accessible. You have a filter button next to an assign button at the top of every board. The filter button allows you to filter between all the columns and per column.
Let’s say you wanted to see all the £10,000 deals in your sales pipeline. You’d click into the Deal Size column and select 10,000. Sadly, there’s no way to sort/filter the information based on data specific.
For example, I couldn’t seem to filter down any deals above or below £10,000. This is normal in apps like Airtable, Notion and Coda. But there doesn’t seem to be this ability.
